afraid of getting old…

Today was a crazy day, as are most fridays at my place of employment. I was booked with services or so it felt like. I had a full honors funeral to attend at 11, and the folding of the flag was such an amazing thing to see. I teared up as usual when the honor guard handed the flag over to the widow. I keep wondering what it is that they say when they pass on the flag. Whatever it is…. they usually start to cry and that in turn makes me. They also did the gun salute and that was cool, since I havent ever seen that before.

But comes the next service…. that no one showed to. I was really saddened by this since the this 90 something little old lady had to have touched so many lives. So, as I brought her back to be stored for the evening, i tied the velvet bag her urn was in… I said my own little prayer for her, and hugged her tightly. Hopefully, she knows that at lest I was there. Kinda makes ya think a little…..

Today was Memorial Day and as you could possible imagine the busiest day ever at a mortuary. I approached an elderly couple that was standing over a grave that was covered in flowers to see if they would like for me to polish off the marker. Instantly they said yes, and proceeded to tell me that they were there to visit there eldest grandson that was killed in a car accident a few years back. I stayed and let this grandmother tell me how her grandson was “lost” for 4 days before he was found. And how he was active in youth ministry at his church, a up and coming model, and just an all American great guy. I felt bad for her loss. But I felt great to just to make her feel good because I listened. She gave me the biggest hug as I felt a little bit of her loss go away, I smiled.

It is gonna be a long weekend

So, I just got back to work yesterday from taking a couple days off. I returned to a little chaos! I can tell you that there is never a dull moment in this funeral home. Like most funeral establishments we are two separate entities working as one. First we have the funeral side, and then the cemetery side. We try to work hand in hand to make all the processes flow. However, this rarely happens.

I am also finding it weird how people in there worst time of grief can be so rude and down right EVIL. I am here to help them and console and to try to make this time a bit easier and BAM i get called every word in the book. Or better yet…. my family walked out on me after telling me I was too nice! What gives? I really felt that I wasn’t overly peppy and I know I had no sparkles in my lip gloss that give me away as being a closet prep! aauughhh the frustrations!

I thought that it would be interesting to start a blog on my new job.. working at one of the leading funeral homes in Northern California. I have always been interested in the funeral industry so I decided to take the leap and “just do it”.

So I plan on writing about some of the stuff that goes on here, no names of course to protect the identity of the deceased, but also to help get some of this stuff off my shoulders so I can sleep at night. Please feel free to comment or give any advice.
